Tretiva is prescribed for treating severe nodular acne that has not responded to other treatments. Nodular acne comprises swollen lumps caused by excessive sebum (facial oil) production. As a vitamin A derivative, Tretiva reduces sebum production, helping to prevent lasting facial scars. This medication falls under a category of compounds known as retinoids.
The dosage of Tretiva will differ for each patient. Always adhere to your physician's directions and/or the instructions on the medication label. If your doctor has advised you to take Tretiva on a regular schedule and you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if your next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and return to your regular schedule. Do not take double doses unless instructed.
Any medication taken in excess can have serious repercussions. If you suspect an overdose of Tretiva, contact your doctor or poison control center right away. Symptoms of overdose may include loss of balance, vomiting, stomach pain, facial flushing, and headache.
Like other medications, Tretiva may lead to some side effects. When they do occur, these side effects are usually minor and temporary. However, some effects can be serious and may necessitate notifying a doctor or visiting the nearest hospital immediately. It's important to note that side effects of Tretiva cannot be predicted. If any side effects arise or vary in severity, inform your doctor as soon as possible.
Tretiva may lead to birth defects, bone and muscle issues, abdominal problems, hearing and vision difficulties, painful swallowing, dark urine, rectal bleeding, severe heartburn, dizziness, and intense headaches. This list does not encompass all potential side effects. Always consult with your doctor and fully comply with their guidance while taking Tretiva.
